Recently we had some friends over for cocktails and appetizers and it was a huge hit with everyone. I think the reason people loved it so much was that it was more relaxed than a sit down dinner you could pick and choose what you wanted and there were tons of different appetizers to try.

While I served a couple of standards like These Sweet and Spicy Lil Smokies and these little French Dip Crescent Rolls. I served a some fancier fare also. Like this chilled Shrimp Cocktail and these Garlic and Herb Marinated Olives and Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms. I made a pitcher of Sangria as our welcome cocktail. I’d say this is my new favorite way of entertaining friends!

Where can I buy Smoked Salmon?

Smoked Salmon is available at most grocery stores in the seafood section. It will be in the refrigerated cases in a vacuumed sealed package. You might also be able to find smoked salmon near the canned fish, such at tuna, look for Smoked Salmon in cans, jars or foil packages.

Substitutions and Variations:

Canned Salmon: In a pinch you can use a can of salmon. You will lose the smokey flavor that is added by smoked salmon but the dip still be delicious.

Dried Herbs: While I recommend fresh herbs for this recipe you can use dried herbs from your spice rack. Dried herbs do have a stronger flavor. As a rule for every 1 tablespoon of fresh herbs is equal to 1 teaspoon dried. So for this recipe the swaps would be:

-1 tablespoon fresh dill =1 teaspoon dill weed

-1 tablespoon fresh chives = 1 teaspoon dried chives (or freeze dried)

Serve It Warm: This delicious dip can be served chilled as directed or you can served it warm. To serve warm follow the directions a stated for steps 1-3 then follow the directions below:

-Preheat oven to 350°F. Transfer the prepared dip into a greased baking dish. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until bubbly along the edges.

-For a little added flavor try topping with some Parmesan cheese before placing in the oven.

Serve it up with:

  • toast points

  • tortilla chips
  • crackers
  •  Pita bread
  • it even makes a nice addition to a veggie tray.
