How to make homemade Apple Pie:

(scroll down for full recipe)

Ingredients:

  • Honeycrisp Apples
  • Refrigerated Pie Crust
  • Brown Sugar
  • Allspice
  • Nutmeg
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Lemon Juice
  • Butter
  • Egg White
  • All-Purpose Flour

Measured ingredients needed to make an Apple Pie presented in pinch bowls on a white marble countertop.

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Remove the pre-made pie crusts from the fridge and let them sit on the counter for about 10 minutes. Squeeze lemons removing any from the juice. Set aside.
  2. Peel, core and slice the apples into 1/2 thick pieces. Set them aside.
  3. In a small mixing bowl stir together the brown sugar, all-purpose flour, ground cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg.
  4. Add apples to a large mixing bowl. Pour in the lemon juice and gently mix to coat the apples. Then add the dry ingredient mixture to the bowl and gently everything iiall together.
  5. Press one of the premade pie dough rounds into a 9-inch pie dish, draping the excess dough over the edge.
  6. Carefully pour the coated apples into the pie dish, then use a spoon or spatula to level the top of the pie.
  7. Place the small cubes of butter over the apples evenly.
  8. Top the pie with the second pie dough crust. Pinch the two crusts together along the rim of the pie, then cut off any excess dough with a knife.
  9. Cut four 2-inch vents in the center of the top crust to allow the steam to escape during the baking process.
  10. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whisk the egg white until it becomes slightly foamy. Then brush the top of the pie with the egg white. Discard any remaining egg white.
  11. Use a pie shield or foil to cover the edges of the pie crust. Bake for 35 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for 15 additional minutes.
  12. Allow the pie to cool and thicken for at least 4 hours before serving.

Substitutions and Variations:

Apples: I used Honeycrisp apples for this recipe. These apples are sweet, crisp with just a touch of tartness. This variety of apple holds up well through the baking process. Other variety of apples you could use to make this pie:

  • Granny Smith – These apples have a firm texture that bakes well and they are perfect for baking.
  • Pink Lady – These apples have a perfect combination of sweet and tartness and will hold their shape when baked.
  • Jazz – Sweet flavor with a good crisp texture that works well for baking.
  • Golden Delicious – These apples have a great sweet and tart flavor but will break down some when baked.

More or Less Sugar: Depending on how sweet you prefer your apple pie to be seasoned you can adjust the amount of granulated sugar in the recipe.

Fresh Juice: Fresh juice is best because it’s flavor it brighter and crisper. However, if you have a bottle of lemon juice you can definitely use it in the place of the fresh squeezed juice.Side view of a slice of pie loaded with slices of apples.

Tips and Notes:

Do not skip the cooling the process after removing the pie from the oven. If you serve the pie too soon the filling will not have enough time to set and the pie will fall apart when sliced.

If you want to serve your pie warm you can do so by reheating it after it’s cooled to room temperature.

How to reheat Apple Pie to serve it warm:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F
  2. Line a sheep pan with parchment paper then place the pie, slices or the whole pie, on the baking sheet and reheat for 10-15 minutes.
  3. To tell if the pie is warmed through use a toothpick or skewer inserted in the middle. I the middle of the toothpick is cold the pie is cold.
  4. If you are concerned about the crust becoming too done while reheating you can loosely wrap it in foil before placing it in the oven.

Serving Suggestions:

Try topping a big slice of this easy homemade apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to serve it al a mode. Other suggestions:

  • Add a drizzle of caramel sauce over the ice cream.
  • Top with Salted Caramel Ice Cream or Cinnamon Ice Cream
  • Finish it off with Whipped Cream.

I hope you and your family will love this recipe as much as we do! If you do try this recipe please come back and leave a comment letting me know how much you liked it!

Happy Baking Y’all!
