How to make an easy Apple Crisp:
(full printable recipe at bottom of the page)
Ingredients:
- apples
- rolled oats
- vanilla extract
- brown sugar
- ground cinnamon
- sugar
- all-purpose flour
- butter
- corn starch
- water
- vanilla ice cream (for serving)
Special Equipment:
- Pasty Cutter
- 9×9 baking pan
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F while the oven is heating up butter or spray a 9×9 inch baking pan (or dish) with nonstick spray. Set it aside.
- Peel and chop apples into chunks. I try to make them from 1/2 inch to one inch in size.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon.
- Cut in the cold cubed butter with a pastry cutter, until the texture is crumb like.
- Using your fingers or the back of a spoon press half of the mixture into the bottom of a 9×9 square baking dish or pan.
- Add the chopped apples to the pan, making sure to cover all the crumb mixture.
- In a small saucepan combine the sugar, cornstarch, water and vanilla extract. Bring the mixture to a boil. Continue cooking for two minutes stirring continuously. Until the sauce is thick and clear. Pour the mixture over the apples.
- Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture over the top. Bake for an hour or until the apples are fork tender.
Substitutions and Variations:
Add some Nuts. Sprinkle a cup of chopped pecans or walnut to the top layer of the crumb mixture before placing the apple crisp in the oven.
Apples Varieties: I recommend using Granny Smith Apples for this recipe. The tart flavor and crispness make them the prefect choice to compliment the sweetness of the other ingredients. If you prefer a sweet apple flavor could also use Honeycrisp or Jazz apples. To find out about the best apples for baking you can check out my post for Easy Apple Pie.
What does it mean to cut in the butter?
To do this there are three common methods:
- Using a pastry blender to mash and divide the butter into small pieces and the dough resembles pea sized crumbs or sand
- Using two forks pulling in opposite directions until the butter is cut into small pieces and the dough becomes crumbly.
- You can use a food processor and pulse the mixture until the dough becomes a crumb like mixture
My Notes and Tips:
This recipe calls for cold, cubed butter. It is best to wait until just before you add the butter to the crumb mixture to take it from the refrigerator.
I used a 9×9 pan but an 8×8 pan will also work. A glass baking dish of either size will work wonderfully as well.
Serving Suggestions:
Of course you can serve this apple crisp plain but, I think the absolute best way is topped with a scoop vanilla ice cream.
Some other ideas for toppings are:
- caramel sauce
- chopped pecans
- chopped walnuts
