Hamburger Steak with Onions and Brown Gravy

Growing up we ate Hamburger Steak quite a bit. As an adult it’s become one of my favorite comfort foods. This recipe for Hamburger Steak with Onions and Brown Gravy is my twist on this classic recipe.

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon dry onion soup mix
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup thinly sliced onions
  • 1 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • salt and pepper to taste


  1. In a bowl combine ground beef, dry onion soup mix, salt and pepper
  2. Divide meat into 4 even portions and shape into patties
  3. In a large skillet cook ground beef on medium heat for 6 - 10 minutes per side (until cooked through)
  4. Remove cooked patties, add onions to skillet and cook 5 minutes
  5. Add garlic and cook for 2 minutes
  6. Add flour, broth and Worcestershire sauce to skillet stir until smooth
  7. Turn heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes stirring occasionally
  8. Return patties to skillet and heat through
