Who doesn’t love a sheet cake?  This Vanilla Sheet Cake is the ultimate birthday cake! Sure you can pick one up at almost any grocery store but there is nothing better than a homemade cake to say Happy Birthday, Congratulations, or just for enjoying for no special reason at all. Honestly, I think we don’t spend enough time just celebrating everyday life. Here are a few more sheet cakes to help you celebrate no matter the reason: Yellow Sheet Cake with Chocolate Frosting, Chocolate Sheet Cake, Old Fashioned Chocolate Pie.

How to Make Vanilla Sheet Cake:

Ingredients:

  • All Purpose Flour
  • Sugar
  • Baking Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Satt
  • Milk
  • White Vinegar
  • Vanilla
  • Unsalted Butter
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Rainbow Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Start by adding the vinegar to the milk and stirring, then set aside.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350℉ and grease your baking dish.
  3. Then stir together all of the dry ingredients for the cake, the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Make a well in the center and add in the milk and vinegar mixture, oil, and vanilla, and stir until there are no clumps.
  5. Pour the cake batter into your greased baking dish and bake for about 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean, or with a few crumbs.
  6. Let cool for at least an hour, once it reaches room temperature, feel free to chill in the fridge.
  7. Once the cake is cool, make the frosting by beating together the butter, powdered sugar, milk, salt, and vanilla, until thick and creamy.
  8. Frost the cake, then add the sprinkles to the cake as desired before cutting and enjoying!

Substitutions and Variations:

Add a Little Frosting: I made a simple Vanilla Buttercream Frosting for this cake. You could use a Whipped Cream Frosting or this fluffy Marshmallow Frosting. Canned store bought frosting is another easy choice for frosting.

Milk or Almond Milk? Either of these will work great with this recipe.

Make It Festive:  Decorate the cake to make it special. Add  sprinkles, chocolate chips, crushed cookies or candy bars. Don’t forget the candles for wishing!

Notes and Tips:

Baking Soda and Baking Powder: You need to use both to help the cake rise and to achieve a light, fluffy texture . Do not omit one or reduce the amounts.

Let It Set: Give the milk and vinegar at least five minutes to sit before adding to the dry cake ingredients. The mixture creates a quick buttermilk that will help bring out the sweetness of the cake’s flavor.

Don’t Overmix: If you mix the frosting too much it will start to melt. However, if you do accidentally overmix you can correct this by either by placing it in the fridge for a few minutes, or by adding more powdered sugar.
