Once you learn how to make an Old Fashioned you’ll make them all the time. This classic drink is a delicious bourbon based cocktail is enhanced by the flavors of bitters and fruit and served over ice. Perfect for sipping this cocktail is always the perfect way to unwind after a hectic week or long hard day.

How do you make and Old Fashioned?

Ingredients:

  • Bourbon
  • Angosta Bitters
  • Sugar Cube
  • Water (optional)
  • Orange Peel (garnish)
  • Cherry (garnish)

Ingredients needed to make a Old Fashioned presented on a wood table top.

Special Equipment:

  • Rock Glass or Old Fashioned Glass
  • Muddler
  • Cocktail Spoon

Instructions:

Step One: In the bottom of a rock glass muddle together a sugar cube with bitters and a small splash of water.

Step Two: Pour in bourbon and stir for about 30 seconds using a cocktail spoon.

Step Three: Add ice to the glass.

Step Four: Garnish with orange peel and cherry.

How much water do I use?

A splash of water is not much water at all less than a teaspoon of water will suffice for making this cocktail.

Variations and Substitutions:

  • The water in this recipe is optional. I find a small amount of water helps the sugar cube to dissolve but it is not an absolute must in making this cocktail.
  • The orange peel is the traditional garnish for an Old Fashioned you can use a lemon peel or both if you prefer.
  • I used Luxuardo Cherries as a garnish. Any kind of cherries will work beautifully if you don’t have or can’t find the Luxuardo cherries.

What is the proper glass for serving an Old Fashioned?

Old Fashions are served in a small tumbler made of glass with a wide rim and a thick bottom. Sometimes these are called rocks glasses, low ball glasses. They are also often referred to as old fashioned glasses.

Five different styles of low ball cocktail glasses on a wood table top.

I hope you enjoy sipping on this classic cocktail. I have some other fun drinks posted on this blog you might enjoy checking out including Moscow Mules, Beer Margaritas, and one of my very favorites Pear and Apple Sangria.

Cheers Y’all!
