Growing up we ate Hamburger Steak quite a bit. As an adult it’s become one of my favorite comfort foods. This recipe for Hamburger Steak with Onions and Brown Gravy is my twist on this classic recipe.
Over the years I’ve added some things to make this recipe really my own. My mom never made hamburger steak with onions because my dad doesn’t like foods with a strong onion flavor. My husband and I like the flavor of onion in a lot of the beef recipes I make so I thought why not try onions on top of hamburger steak? I’ve got to tell you it didn’t disappoint!
So I bet now you’re thinking I’ve had hamburger steak with onions and gravy before, how is this any different?
This recipe for Hamburger Steak with Onions and Brown Gravy has a little secret ingredient. I add in a tablespoon of dry onion soup mix to the ground beef before cooking it. The soup mix gives the beef a little extra kick. I don’t recommend adding more than a tablespoon of soup mix to one pound of ground beef. Any more than that and the flavor is too strong.
Choose a deep skillet when making this recipe because you will cook both the hamburger and gravy in it. I use my large cast iron skillet but any skillet will do as long at it is deep enough to hold a cup of liquid plus the patties and onions.
In a bowl combine one pound ground beef with one tablespoon dry onion soup mix. You can use a spoon but I just mix it in with my hands. Once you’ve combined the beef and soup mix divide into four equal sized patties.
In a large skillet warm a teaspoon of olive oil over medium heat giving it a turn of the pan. Add patties to skillet and cook. I’d say a good rule of thumb is 6-10 minutes per side depending on the thickness of your patties.
Remove cooked hamburger steaks from skillet and set aside. Dump the thinly sliced onions into the same skillet. Cook the onions for about five minutes or until they are tender and translucent.
Add garlic to onions and cook for two minutes. Then combine flour, broth, and Worcestershire Sauce to the garlic and onions. Stir until smooth. Reduce heat to low and cook for 15 minutes stirring occasionally.
Return hamburger steaks to skillet to heat through. Serve hamburger steaks with onions and gravy on top. Garnish with scallions if desired.
This simple Hamburger Steak with Onions and Brown Gravy recipe is perfect for a weeknight meal. I think I love it most of all because it reminds me of home.
