Nothing says Fall like a great pumpkin dessert and this Easy Pumpkin Dump Cake is everything wonderful about this season in a pan.

Baked Pumpkin Dump Cake being scooped with a spoon.

I love an easy dessert recipe and some of my favorites are made using a cake mix. Desserts like this Easy Chocolate Bundt Cake, Strawberry Vanilla Poke Cake, and these Triple Chocolate Chip Cake Mix Cookies.

This Pumpkin Dump Cake recipe is prefect for feeding a crowd and a great alternative to a pumpkin pie for the holidays. Everyone will love the creamy pumpkin layer and the buttery crust.

What is a dump cake?

A dump cake is a really easy dessert that is made with a cake mix base and combined with a fruit filling. Dump cakes get their name from because when you make them you just dump the ingredients into a pan, give it stir, and bake.

How to make Easy Pumpkin Dump Cake:

Ingredients:

  • Yellow Cake Mix
  • Evaporated Milk
  • Eggs
  • Butter
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Pecans
  • Pure Pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)

Instructions:

  1.  Combine pumpkin, milk, eggs, sugar and cinnamon in a large bowl until very wet.
  2. Transfer the mixture into a greased 9×13 cake pan spreading it out evenly with a spatula.
  3. Sprinkle yellow cake mix and chopped pecans over the pumpkin mixture. Then  pour melted butter over the top in a preheated 350º oven for fifty minutes.
  4. What is the difference between canned pure pumpkin and pumpkin pie filling?
  5. Pure Pumpkin is simply canned cooked, pureed pumpkin. There is not sugar or spice added to the contents of the can.
  6. Pumpkin Pie Filling is pumpkin that has been flavored with spices such as cinnamon, allspice and clove and sugar.

*Note: Do not try to replace the pure pumpkin with pumpkin pie filling. While they are similar there are some distinct differences.

Cake served in a white bowl topped with a scoop of ice cream and caramel sauce.

Variations and Substitutions:

Swap out the yellow cake mix for spice cake mix or pumpkin spice cake mix if you prefer.

The pecans can be exchanged for walnuts.

Storing and Reheating:

  • Store in a covered airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
  • This cake is best served warm so when enjoying leftovers I recommend heating it in the microwave in 30 second increments until warm.

This cake is best served warm.  I serve this with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel. It is also delicious topped with whipped cream or warm caramel sauce.

I hope you and your family will love this recipe as much as we do! If you do try this recipe please come back and leave a comment letting me know how much you liked it!

Happy Baking Y’all!
